Create the Perfect Dorm Room
A dorm room is the one room that college students have for sleeping, entertaining and studying. Whether they have to share it with someone else or not, it's important to be able to create the perfect one so that it is comfortable. Those who have a great dorm room can feel more at home and thus do better with the overall college experience.
A 15x15 space with only one window is the reality that most college students face. You can make it as exciting as you want - especially when you follow these decorating tips.

1. Utilize the Space

Take advantage of the space you have and build up. Shelves along the wall can give you the space that you would otherwise use a bookcase for. You can also find storage opportunities under the bed. A little creativity can go a long way inside of a dorm.

2. Create the Illusion of More Space

Mirrors can be your best friend. By adding a floor length mirror here and there, it can make your dorm look twice the size. Don't be fooled, it's the same space, but you are less likely to get claustrophobic with these illusions.

3. Surround Yourself with Loved Ones

One of the best ways to avoid getting homesick is by surrounding yourself with loved ones. Add photos of family, friends, and even your pet that you had to leave at home. You can create a photo collage over your bed or even get a digital frame for your nightstand.

4. Add Some Privacy

If you have the pleasure of sharing your dorm room with someone else, there may be times when you crave privacy. A folding screen can be your best friend. It collapsed when it's not needed and can create a makeshift wall when it is.

5. Create a Comfortable Space to Watch TV

Watching a good movie is a great way to unwind. Some dorms today even have access to programming such as DirecTV which has endless amount of movies and TV shows to help you forget the stress of college for a minute. You can often make a small comfortable home theater with a little effort such as big pillows, a small couch, and a creative coffee table.

6. Make Your Bed Comfortable

Your mattress isn't the most comfortable, so to get the perfect dorm, you have to work on your bed. Add a pillow top cover for your mattress and invest in a comforter that's going to last. When you can get a good night's sleep, it will allow you to concentrate on your studies throughout the day.

7. Incorporate a Theme

Make your dorm a cool place to be. You can make it as geeky or as chic as you want by adding posters, mobiles, and anything else that you can think of.

8. Create Ambience with Lighting

Don't settle for the one lamp that the dorm room gives you - if they even give you that. Get a great light for your desk and even another light that throws some designs onto the ceiling.

9. Decorate the Walls

There are plenty of ways to decorate the walls. This includes temporary wallpaper as well as wall applique. You can add quotes, patterns, and various other designs so you don't have to stare at painted cinderblock.

10. Develop a Green Thumb

A great way to add some color to your dorm is with greens. A potted plant or a sabal palm will liven up your room for sure.

11. Cover the Floors

You never know who or what came before you. If you don't like the idea of running around a bare floor, you can add a rug of any color. This will make it more comfortable to walk around barefoot and feel as if you are at home.
